Read: This Will Change Your World

Are you reading? If you think last night’s sexting spree that you fired off before bed would qualify as answering 'yes' to the previous question, then please continue. By “reading” I don’t mean the latest BuzzFeed article or Tinder profile, but something informative and of substance that can open your mind and teach you to be a better person.

You were forced to read for the first part of your life and as soon as you no longer had to, you likely gave it up. As technology grew and became portable it changed how we read. Even the content that we are fed in the digital world is tailored to our active minds and short attention spans. Let's return to substance.

We are people of the world.

We can get so busy running around in our hamster balls and pressing repeat at the end of the day that we often forget what’s around us. It’s important to be reminded of the larger issues facing the rest of the world. Struggles that are bigger than the order that the Barista fucked up. Reading tunes us into how we stay connected as humans.

We are explorers.

We search through places and follow adventures that take place in a different space and time. Getting lost in a great Sci-fi or Fantasy novel can let us escape some of the everyday stressors. Exploring magical landscapes in books can help us grow our imaginations and sharpen our creativity. These are tools that we can use to serve us quite well in our day jobs. Or just help us get back to the art of play.

Be better.

The more you read the sharper your mind works and the better you can use language to choose your adventure. The better you can articulate your ideas to yourself the better you can clearly state your dreams to the universe and to others. This is the start of really working towards getting what you want. You must first will it. It is not as big of a stretch as you might think. Language is powerful.

It is 2014 and reading is sexy again. Not necessarily in the librarian, dark rimmed glasses sort of way. It can be that. But also in the empowering way that we encourage each other to do more and live out more of our potential. When was the last time you were on a date and asked the girl what was on her bookshelf?
