How To Introduce Newcomers

Your best friend from college is in town and you ask him to join you at your office holiday party. He’s a friend from a different part of your life, but you’re excited to introduce him to your professional life and work friends. There are a few rules to remember when introducing newcomers, so everyone feels comfortable with each other immediately.

1. Take your time with introductions.

Always present the newcomer to a few people at a time. Take them around the room and gradually introduce them.

2. Don’t overwhelm them with a big group.

Avoid introducing a newcomer to an entire group at once. It can feel slightly awkward and less personal. If you must, announce the newcomer’s name to everyone.

  • Example: “I want to introduce you to Mr. Doosan.” Then, give the names of each person in the group.

3. Remember common courtesy.

When introducing strangers at a party and they’re across the room from each other, always take the man to the woman.
