How To Have A Proper Introduction

You get one shot to make a first impression. The way you present yourself sets the stage for how people remember you.

1. Offer a firm handshake.

This is the first point of contact and it’s very important. Give clear eye contact, crack a smile, and shake with your right hand. Make sure your hand is dry before going in for the shake. The standard is three quick up and downs of the wrist and release.

2. Remember their names.

When you’re being introduced to new people, get in the habit of remembering the names of the people you’re meeting. It always helps to repeat the person’s name using different greeting variations. This helps you repeat the person’s name in conversation so it sticks.

Examples:

  • “How are you, Mr. Colli?”
  • “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dianna.”

3. Always give a warm welcome.

When someone you haven’t met comes to your place of business or your home, it’s recommended to say, “welcome.” Everyone wants to feel comfortable when entering a new space or situation. If the person is visiting you, the responsibility rests on you to create a warm welcome.

Examples:

  • “Welcome, Mr. Colli, it’s such a pleasure to have you.”
  • “I’m very happy you are here with us, Dianna.”

If your name has been mispronounced, simply say, “My apologies, but my name is Dean, not Dan.” Make sure to smile so the person who made the mistake doesn’t feel uncomfortable.

If you are introduced a second time to someone and they don’t remember your name, don’t embarrass them by reminding them that you’ve already met. Just say, “How are you?” and give them a big smile. Don’t make them feel little – people forget and we’ve all been there.

4. Be authentic.

When you are being introduced, make sure to smile and speak afterwards. Do not ever be fake with your intentions.
