1. What to bring

 

Don’t arrive empty handed. Ever.

 

If you’re joining in on a big family meal or attending a holiday event, bring something homemade, simple to prepare, and easy to transport like cranberry sauce or cookies. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, or create a lot of mess in your kitchen, so keep it simple. If putting prepared cookie dough slabs in the oven is too much, then opt for the sparkling or red wine. Ask your local wine shop to choose it for you.

 

2. What to wear

 

It’s superficial, so what? Looking good in what you wear means a lot to your host and can make the world of difference in your confidence and presentation. After all, first impressions are everything.

3. Where to sit

 

This may feel a little tricky if you’re new to the table, but when it comes to choosing a seat, have confidence! Your host wants you to feel comfortable just as much as you want to do everything right, so remember to relax and even if you sit in Grandfather’s seat, it’s not the end of the world. Laugh about it and switch seats if you’re instructed to.

 

4. What to Say

 

In these situations, especially if they are new and uncomfortable, say you find yourself seated next to your in-laws or your CEO, there is only one point to follow: BE AGREEABLE.  Be positive and have an open mind to any conversation that might go across the table. Crack a smile, even if it hurts.
